Dear Senator and Congressman:
The devastation from last week's powerful earthquake shook Peru's coast near Peru's capital of Lima, leaving in its trail more than 500 dead, 1000's upon 1000's of injuries and destruction which has contributed to homelessness, starvation, and despair. The physical casualties and death in overwhelming numbers have not only impacted Peru itself but has caused untold hardship and feelings of powerlessness for the many family, friends and loved ones residing here in New Jersey and Passaic County, the home of the biggest Peruvian-American community in the nation. Our lives have been saddened by the inability to communicate with our loved ones, not knowing if they are alive or injured or if they have had enough to eat with water distribution ruptured farmers fear their animals will die and crops will be destroyed.
As you know from being a great friend and advocate of our community, Temporary Protected Status can and should be a strategy for Peru in this time of crises. When deporting numerous undocumented immigrants during an obvious time of crises, the United States is essentially sentencing these individuals to death by reintroducing them to an area fraught with danger, chaos and widespread instability.
Our local Peruvian American Political Action Committee and the national Peruvian American Organizations PAPO USA have all written the President, together with other key elected officials in supporting this extraordinary and humane measure.
Dearest and most revered United States Senator and Congressman from New Jersey, please advocate for our community in this attempt for a compassionate strategy that will continue to categorize the United States of America as the greatest nation in the world.
With all due respect and gratitude,
Dino Callegari
